The joint venture, Massman-Traylor-Alberici, bid $229.5 million to construct the main span of the cable-stay bridge. The only other bid for the project was for $274.9 million.

The Missouri Highway and Transportation Commission voted unanimously to award the joint venture the contract for the project.

“We look forward to working with a diverse and qualified team to undertake this important infrastructure project,” said Alberici Chief Operating Officer LeRoy Stromberg Jr.

Alberici, based in St. Louis, is a diversified construction company with extensive experience in marine, steel and heavy industrial construction. Massman, based in Kansas City, Missouri, and Traylor, based in Evansville, Indiana, have extensive experience in bridge and marine construction.

Under the proposed project, the Massman-Traylor-Alberici joint venture would build the 2,770-foot-long main span of the bridge. The main span’s two towers, separated by a space of 1,500 feet, will rise at least 460 feet above the river.

When complete, the bridge will be the third-longest cable-stayed bridge in the United States, according to transportation officials.

The joint venture estimates its portion of the project will require more than 8,000 tons of structural steel and 28,000 cubic yards of concrete.

The new four-lane bridge will route traffic on Interstate 70 over the new bridge about a mile north of the existing Martin Luther King Bridge, diverting about 40,000 vehicles per day from existing bridges in downtown St. Louis. Missouri and Illinois transportation officials have set a target of opening the new bridge by January 2014.

Alberici reported $1.3 billion in revenue in 2008, and it is ranked as the 47th largest construction firm in the United States by the Engineering News-Record.
