Basin Electric Power Plant Reduces Emissions with Alberici’s Help
February 2, 2010
ST. LOUIS – An environmental project aimed at improving North Dakota’s air quality is nearing completion. Since 2008, Alberici Constructors Inc. has been an integral part of one of the largest construction projects in North Dakota. The company served as general contractor for a $410 million environmental project to reduce sulfur dioxide emissions at Leland Olds Station (LOS), Stanton, N.D. The two-unit, coal-based power plant is owned and operated by Basin Electric Power Cooperative.
Newly added Wet Flue Gas Desulfurization scrubbers will remove more than 95 percent of the plant’s sulfur-dioxide emissions. The scrubber for LOS Unit 2 is scheduled to become operational later this year and LOS Unit 1 will follow in the fall of 2011, noted a spokesperson for Basin Electric.
“We are pleased to have had the opportunity to work with Basin Electric and their extremely professional leadership on this important environmental improvement project,” said Alberici Vice President and Market Leader Craig Fesler. Alberici President and Chief Executive Officer Greg Kozicz remarked, “Providing construction services in North Dakota is consistent with Alberici’s strategy to grow into new geographic areas.”
Headquartered in Bismarck, N.D., Basin Electric Power Cooperative is one of the largest electric generation and transmission cooperatives in the United States, providing wholesale electricity to 136 member systems in nine states serving over 2.8 million electric consumers.

Last August, Alberici workers set an outlet cone on the Unit 1 desulfurization system at Leland Olds.

In fall 2008, an Alberici crew prepared to set part of the desulfurization system at Leland Olds.
St. Louis-based Alberici Constructors, Inc. worked in excess of 1,003,000 labor hours on the Leland Olds Station project without a lost-time accident.
With $1.3 billion in revenue in 2008, Engineering News-Record ranks Alberici Constructors, Inc. as the 47th largest construction firm in the United States.
