Ameren Energy Coffeen SCR Units 1 & 2 Installation

Ameren Energy Generating selected Alberici and engineering firm, Sargent & Lundy, to install two new SCRs at their coal-fired power plant in Coffeen, IL.  The project was completed in two phases, each within a year.  Most of the work was finished prior to the critical fall outages and during winter months.  By the time outages began, 75 percent of all ductwork had been fabricated and all structural steel was on site with a major portion already erected.

Ductwork and structural steel for Unit 2 was set in three months using a 2200-ton Mammoet crane.  This allowed Alberici to reduce manpower needed for the Unit 2 outage and enabled the project to finish one month early,  The primary rig for steel erection on Unit 1 was an American S-30 stiff-leg derrick mounted on the roof of a powerhouse.  The tower-mounted S-30 assisted by hoisting the trusses (up to 48-tons each) used in the building.  The Unit 1 structure was comprised of 1,708 steel assemblies, 12,728-square-feet of grating, and miles of handrail and stairs.  The shutdown for Unit 1 finished 11 days early.  This achievement was a major milestone and a real tribute to all crafts involved.
