Goreway Mechanical and Piping Installation

Description of Project - Alberici was responsible for the installation of the combined cycle piping for a 860MW natural gas-fired combined cycle facility with

            • three GE Frame 7B gas turbine generators,
            • three Deltak HRSG’s and
            • one Siemens steam turbine generator.

Piping included all high pressure steam systems and combined cycle balance of plant systems. Materials installed were carbon steel, stainless steel and 9% high chrome alloy. There was also approximately 75,000 feet of pipe to install and the tie-in of the steam turbine to high pressure steam piping.

One of the biggest challenges of the project was finding qualified welders and riggers for large-bore, high-chrome alloy pipe in an area with a manpower shortage. To solve the challenge, we brought in resources from other parts of the country and the United States that had the expertise to perform the work.  Fortunately, our good working-relationship with the local union allowed us to bring in these outside forces without causing a problem.

Once we found the appropriate labor force, our next challenge was completing all the work within an enclosed building.  This meant that everything had to be hand-rigged.  To maximize the quality of the welding on the high-chrome alloy pipe Alberici used orbital tig welding.
